Definition: A basic social unit consisting of parents and their children.

Non-SEE sign; borrowed from another signed language. Probably old ASL. It's currently growing more common, replacing the F-handshaped sign FAMILY.

MOTHER, FATHER, CHILDREN, family tree, RELATIVE, STEPFAMILY.

Gloss: IX/\ REGARDLESS/NOT-MATTER IX NOT SPEAK, POSS FAMILY/\ CL:family IX1 CL:1 APPROACH/\ CL:C TEND-to CALM-DOWN + AFFECT.

English equivalent: Even if he doesn't speak, his mere presence has a calming effect on the family.

Spatial agreement of the subject (the man) and the subject (the family) with the verb (calm down and affect).
