In January 1992, NASA astronaut Bill Readdy launched a message in beginner-level ASL from space shuttle Discover during the STS-42 mission.

In 2010, astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson sent a special message in beginner-level ASL to Earth from International Space Station (ISS) to encourage and support Deaf youths who aspire to become astronauts.
