Vocabulary review for:
How to sign "without" in American Sign Language (ASL)?
Definition: With the absence, omission, or avoidance of; not with; lacking.
Pronunciation (sign description): Thumbs of both "10" hands point up and fingers of both hands are in contact. The hands diverge apart at the same time the handshape for both hands transforms into the "5" handshape.
Usage or context examples: "cannot live without", "cannot see without my eyeglasses"...
When not to use "without"... When English sentences have the word "without" in them, it doesn't mean there is always "without" in ASL translations. Deaf ASL speakers have their own expressions with the language's own grammar and vocabulary.
For example, for the English phrase "survived two days without food or water", it can be expressed in ASL glossed as "SURVIVE TWO-DAY NONE FOOD + WATER".
Antonym: WITH.
