Deaf Culture and tidbits
How many does Star Wars' C-3PO robot know languages? Six million languages. But...
If signed languages are included (which I doubt), C-3PO would be definitely quite rustic and slow! It's all fantasy. C-3PO only speaks a few languages in the movie in the 1980s.
Aside fantasy, in reality, Honda Motor Co's ASIMO humanoid robot actually can speak a real (signed) language, I believe, JSL (Japanese Sign Language) in circa 2011. She's signing slowly, though. Ironically, I've seen ASIMO playing violin very fast in Japan. Heh.
A few years forward in 2014, Toshiba's Japanese humanoid robot Aiko Chihira can speak Japanese Sign Language (JSL) at beginner's level.
It gets better.
