How to sign "paper" in American Sign Language:
Meaning: A material made from fibers (as of wood or cloth) and in the form of thin sheets or a sheet or piece of such material.
Pronunciation (sign description): Dominant flat hand (handshape), palm down (orientation), in contact with the upside passive palm (location), brushes backward twice away from the passive palm (movement).
ASL Learner Tip: Not to confuse PAPER with SCHOOL.
Fingerspelling "papyrus". You can also sign "EGYPTIAN+PAPER"
Paper and pen used to be indispensable that Deaf people usually carry them with them whenever they go out in the 20th century. These days, (smart)phone is the new "paper and pen".
