Elizabeth "Betty" Steel (England, 1766-1795) was the first known deaf European convict and was shipped on the Lady Juliana with other about 150 (hearing) convicts to Australia in 1789. Betty was convicted for stealing a man's wrist watch. In court, before she was convicted, she was questioned whether she was actually deaf-mute or pretending to be.
