Signs for PHONOLOGY

Meaning: The study of how the smallest units of language are organized and used in natural languages, signed and spoken.

Older variation (dominant-handed "P" handshape around the ear). This sign doesn't fit with a general linguistic definition of 'phonology' as this signed word is phonocentric (e.g. "the smallest sounds of language" which is phonocentric rather than "the smallest units of language" which applies to all modalities of languages).

LINGUISTICS related terms: MORPHOLOGY, COARTICULATION, PHONOLOGY.

The smallest units of spoken language are phonemes. Likewise, signed language has the smallest units of language, called parameters and their sub-parameters called primes. Learn more about ASL phonology.
