TTY is a teletypewriter, a kind of telephone device, used by Deaf people to communicate with each other in the 1980s. It is also known as a Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD), but it was termed by the hearing community and was not accepted by Deaf people who still prefer the term, TTY.
