How to sign "summer", "summertime" in American Sign Language (ASL)?

Meaning: The season between spring and autumn; the warmest season of the year, in the northern hemisphere from June to August and in the southern hemisphere from December to February.

Sign description: Dominant clawed forefinger or "X" hand, palm down, brushes across the forehead once. Variation of the movement may be either one slightly long movement or two short repetitions.

Minimal pairs for handshape: The shape of the index finger for SUMMER is a hook or claw, unlike BLACK which has a handshape of the straight index finger.

Minimal pairs for handshape (same movement and location except for the handshape): BLACK, FORGET, MIND-BLANKED, LITHUANIA...

Minimal pairs for location: DRY.

ASL has its own grammar and structure in sentences that works differently from English. For plurals, verb inflections, word order, etc., learn grammar in the "ASL Learn" section. For search in the dictionary, use the present-time verbs and base words. If you look for "said", look up the word "say". Likewise, if you look for an adjective word, try the noun or vice versa. E.g. The ASL signs for French and France are the same. If you look for a plural word, use a singular word.
