How do you say 'bird' in American Sign Language?

Meaning: A warm-blooded egg-laying flying animal distinguished by the possession of feathers, wings, and a beak and (typically) by being able to fly.

Pronunciation (sign description): Dominant "20" hand, with the back of the hand against the mouth, taps twice. It defines a bird's beak, where the index finger and thumb formed.

Learner tip: Don't confuse this with CHICKEN (with slightly different mouthing).

John Brewster, Jr. (1766-1854) is a Deaf American artist, especially a portrait painter. One of his works "Francis O. Watts with Bird" represents the mortality rate of children which was high at the time.
