Numerals

A numeral is a system that represents a set of numbers. Numerals differ from numbers, in which, for example, the symbols "9", "nine", "IX" and "nine in ASL" are expressed in different numerals, yet they all represent the same number. Even though mathematics is universal, there are different ways of expressing the numbers.

Numerals in Sign Language

Like sign languages, manual numerals around the world are not universal. In sign langauges, they have their own signs for the numbers, in the same way that there are different written numbers. E.g. English numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) and English words (one, two, etc.), Roman numbers (I, II, III, IV, etc.), and so on.

Numeral Contexts

Not all numbers in ASL are expressed the same in different contexts, such as money, time, position, etc. For example, the signs for number one (1) and first (1st) in ASL are different.
