When to hire one or two interpreters?
Two ASL/English interpreters are required for continuous service of more than a couple of hours. Like other interpreting services of spoken languages, simultaneous interpreting demands so much mental process that an interpreter can be effective for a short period of time. In addition, this helps prevent interpreters from experiencing possible symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
In an interpreting field, an interpreter can effectively translate for about 15-20 minutes before handing off to his/her team interpreter and resting. During this rest period, the interpreter supports her/his fellow interpreter in action, such as correcting information, filling in gap of missing information, etc. Examples of settings for using two interpreters are: college classes, theatrical performances, etc.
One interpreter is sufficient for a general situation, such as a doctor's appointment, a job interview, a bank or real estate meeting, etc.
Prepare ahead
Preparing ahead of a simultaneous interpreting assignment in some situations (e.g. educational interpreting, theatrical performances, etc) is significant for a good quality of interpreting service. The interpreters on assignment may request further information or a draft of presentation.
What to look for in a good interpreter?
A good interpreter possess the following skills/qualifications and education:
- certification of ASL/English interpreting training
- knowledge of the subject in an interpreting assignment
- immersion in and knowledge of both cultures
- high fluency in both languages (extensive vocabulary and grammar)
- high expressive and receptive skills in both languages
- at least 2-3 years of experience after graduation from an interpreting program
